A New York jury on Monday acquitted subway vigilante Daniel Penny in the chokehold death of street performer Jordan Neely on a Manhattan subway train last May, finding Penny not guilty of criminally negligent homicide.

The hailing of Penny as a hero is part of a right-wing campaign directed against the homeless and the mentally ill, hundreds of whom have no place to live other than New York’s massive subway system.
