The custom three-door G-Wagen represents the first time the Popemobile has been powered by batteries alone.

The Pope will not be putting many miles on his new electric Popemobile, but that’s not the point. The Pope has put out an encyclical called “Laudato Si” on the need for sustainable development, so the Popemobile can be seen as an attempt to walk the walk, for both The Vatican and Mercedes-Benz.

Mercedes Benz is set to launch the electric G-wagon in the Indian markets. Officially called the G 580, it comes with independent motors for each wheel allowing it to do a 360-degree tank turn.

A G-Class has served as the basis for Mercedes' Popemobiles since the 1980s, at which point the Popemobile name became popularized. The first G-Class-based Popemobile was used by Pope John Paul II, who regularly used it for celebrations in Saint Peter’s Square.

The new Popemobile is based on the new G-Class EV and has a single swiveling seat and an optional hard top for rain.
