What Happens to White House Turkeys After They're Pardoned?
In more recent years, the White House Presentation of the National Thanksgiving Turkey has included the "pardoning" of a turkey and its alternate. This started in 1989 with former President George H. W. Bush in 1989, which marked the 200 th anniversary of former President George Washington 's proclamation for Thanksgiving Day.

The sitting president has the option to pardon just one or both of the turkeys. Regardless of that decision, both turkeys will head to Farmamerica: MN Agricultural Interpretive Center in Waseca, Minnesota, to live out the rest of their days in peace, away from anyone's Thanksgiving table.
