Intense snow squalls hit parts of southwestern Ontario, prompting Gravenhurst, a town in the Muskoka region, to declare a state of emergency early Sunday, December 1. Highway 11 was closed, though some sections reopened by Monday night.

Blowing snow off Lake Huron also overwhelmed communities along the lake’s eastern shores, temporarily shuttering roads and transit operations in some cities. Sault Ste. Marie and Bracebridge, two of the other hardest-hit communities, were both digging out from more than a metre of snow, Environment Canada said.

Ontario Provincial Police officers say all the vehicles stuck on the affected part of Highway 11 were removed by Monday morning.
