After watching Nintendo dominate the gaming landscape over the last eight years with a hybrid game console, Sony is getting ready to challenge the Switch with a new handheld console of its own. Bloomberg reports that Sony is in the early stages of developing a portable game console capable of playing PS5 games natively.

Bloomberg have reported that Sony has a new handheld console in early development, which will allow PlayStation fans to play their PS5 games on the go. This is a true handheld, scrapping the game streaming features of the PlayStation Portal. Games will run natively on the console, much like the Nintendo Switch or the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.

Sony is reportedly working on a new portable PlayStation that will rival the Nintendo Switch in the true sense.

Sony seems to be shifting gears, as a new report claims that another PlayStation handheld system is in the works, hoped to be able to play PS5 games natively.

Microsoft reportedly isn't the only company working on a gaming handheld, as Sony once again gets in on the act.

For the first time since 2012, Sony is developing a legitimate handheld device for playing PlayStation games, Bloomberg reports. There isn't much else to say about the device right now, as Bloomberg noted that it's most likely years away from launch — if Sony decides to follow through with launching it at all.

It’s not too late for the major console makers to make a handheld, but reports note a PlayStation handheld may still be years away.
